Post by 1/30/07: Thoughts on Your First Small Group Experience

Now that we've had our small group literature discussions about Stargirl, take a moment to reflect on your experience in the group. What did you like/dislike about how we organized the small groups today? Overall, how was the experience? Be candid.

I did like the fact that you came around and spoke to us and looked at our discussion plans. But all in all, it was like most discussions we undertake in most all our classes. One thing that I especially liked, though, was the fact that my fellow groupies actually discussed the material. It was interesting to hear their viewpoints on the literature. And, as an older student, I appreciated and valued the younger students perceptions.

I like the idea of small group book discussions; it allows everyone's ideas to be heard. My group primarily talked about the novel's themes and issues. We did, however, also talk about how we could address the novel in classrooms.

I liked my group discussion. Everyone brought something interesting to it, like lists of discussion questions or worksheets. Normally I do not like small group discussions very well because it ends up that one or two people do all the work. But this time, everyone contributed nicely and had something important to say.

I liked the small group discussion. It's always interesting to see my peers' different views on the book. I do think however, that we need to have more time in the group. We only had ten minutes. Even though we had a really good discussion going, we only got about halfway through the novel! Please give us more time in the future

I'm a big fan of group discussions. While "brainstorming", I find that you will often find an outlook on the topic that you might not have caught otherwise. The only thing that I think would make them a little more useful might be a little more time. This might not be possible due to class length, but a little more than 10 minutes would be more useful to me.

I LOVED the small group discussn of Stargirl. I agree with Jenimichele that it was awesome how everyone really contributed to the discussion. Everyone seemed to have a similar viewpoint on the book, but also everyone brought something of their own into it that we may have overlooked while reading. I wish we had been given a litte more time to discuss, although we probably could have talked about Stargirl forever. Most everyone can relate to the main character in the book or at least remember a time when there was someone "like her" in our high school etc.

I enjoyed the discussion group that I was in. I was able to hear other students viewpoints and was able to share a few things that I thought were interesting myself. Of course, like everyone else has already mentioned, we could have used a little more time for discussion. I think by bringing discussion plans in to class, it helps us become better prepared for what we will be doing in the future as teachers.

enjoyed small groups. My groups conversation was a little scatters as we spoke what came to our minds about Stargirl. I wish we had followed a tighter outline for our group discussion to make it more productive. This will be something to work on with my regular group weekly. Possibly taking turns on each individual disscussion plans.

I enjoyed the literature groups. It allows everyone in the group a chance to voice their opinion on the particular reading. It also allows the students a chance to ask questions and get answers from others in the group. I liked that bucky walked around and listened to parts of the discussions. I give the students in my group applause for their input. Everyone spoke up and gave their opinion. Everything went well in our group.

i was not present on the wed that the lit groups were assigned...so the first time we met was on monday. it was a good opportunity to get input on interpreting the readings and gave us an opportunity to vent about the pros and cons of the texts...

I like the idea of having group discussions. It gives the students an opportunity to share their ideas with one another. I like being able to hear other students opinions on what we have read.
